Single vs Double Eyelid Covelight: Which Design Suits Your Home?
In Singapore, eyelid covelight offers both aesthetic appeal and practical functionality, making it a popular choice for contemporary interiors.
What is 双眼皮吊顶?
双眼皮吊顶, pronounced shuāng yǎnpí diàodǐng, is the Chinese term commonly used for a layered or double-step false ceiling border. In English, this is often described as a double eyelid ceiling or double eyelid covelight.
Eyelid covelight combines a stepped false ceiling border with lighting directed upwards towards the ceiling. The border creates a defined architectural outline, while the reflected light adds a soft ambient glow.
Single vs Double Eyelid Covelight
Both designs create soft upward lighting. The difference lies in the ceiling border: a single eyelid offers a simpler outline, while a double eyelid adds a more defined, layered finish.
| Feature | Single eyelid covelight | Double eyelid covelight |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Simpler, single-step border | Layered, two-step border |
| Profile installation | Horizontal profile | Vertical profile |
| Appearance | Minimal and understated | More defined and architectural |
| Brightness | Depends on LED selection and layout | Depends on LED selection and layout |
| Best suited for | Minimalist interiors | Homes wanting stronger ceiling detail |
The Minimalist Single Eyelid
Bring a sense of simplicity to your home with a clean, single-step ceiling border. The understated edge frames the room without making the ceiling visually busy, allowing your furniture, wall finishes and other interior features to take centre stage.
When illuminated, the covelight directs light upwards, creating a gentle wash across the surface above. During the day, the single border remains a subtle design detail; in the evening, the warm glow gives it greater presence.
This makes single eyelid an appealing choice for homeowners who enjoy minimalist interiors or prefer a quieter ceiling design. It can complement bedrooms, living rooms and dining spaces where a simple, consistent outline is the desired effect.
Our single eyelid option uses a dedicated horizontally installed aluminium lighting profile. The complete ceiling arrangement and required installation space are assessed to suit your room.
The Elegant Double Eyelid
Give your ceiling greater definition with a two-step border that adds depth to the room’s outline. The additional edge creates a layered finish, with subtle shadow lines helping distinguish each step—even when the covelight is switched off.
When illuminated, light travels upwards from the lighting profile, while the stepped borders below remain visible. This combination of an illuminated surface and layered edges gives the ceiling a stronger architectural presence without requiring multiple bands of light.
Double eyelid is an appealing option when you want the ceiling to play a more noticeable role in your interior. It can frame an open living or dining area, or add a more detailed finish to a bedroom. The proportions of the steps should complement the room and its surrounding features.
Our double eyelid option uses a different, vertically installed aluminium profile. Its installation detail is planned around the selected ceiling layout and desired border proportions.
Which Eyelid Design Suits Your Home?
Start with the appearance you prefer: single eyelid for simplicity, or double eyelid for a layered finish. Then consider how the border will work alongside your curtains, cabinetry, air-conditioning features and available ceiling space.
Double eyelid does not automatically mean brighter lighting, and single eyelid does not automatically require less ceiling drop. Brightness depends on the lighting components and arrangement, while installation space depends on the complete ceiling design.
How the Aluminium Lighting Profile Works
The aluminium profile forms the lighting detail within your eyelid ceiling. It provides a channel for the LED strip and a defined edge that integrates with the surrounding plasterboard finish.
The profile and plasterboard work together: the plasterboard creates the ceiling border, while the aluminium profile positions the lighting to produce the intended upward glow.
Any wiring or lighting-point work should be carried out or supervised by a licensed electrical worker in Singapore.
A Profile for Each Eyelid Design
Our single and double eyelid covelights use different profiles to suit their installation arrangements.
How the Seamless Finish Is Created
The perforated flange is incorporated into the plastering and finishing work, concealing the fixing area within the completed ceiling detail. After finishing and painting, the visible result is a defined architectural edge rather than an exposed mounting flange.
The final appearance depends on careful alignment and workmanship, particularly at corners and where profile lengths join.
How the Light Is Distributed
Our single and double eyelid covelights direct light upwards onto the surface above, creating a soft, reflected ambient glow. The lighting profile sits within the ceiling detail, helping keep the LED source out of normal viewing angles when correctly installed.
This approach suits the preference for discreet, comfortable lighting in contemporary homes: illumination that enhances the room without a bright light source dominating the view.
见光不见灯 — See the Light, Not the Light Source
The design principle 见光不见灯 means enjoying the illumination while concealing its source. The emphasis is on the glow across the room’s surfaces rather than the visible lamp or LED strip.
Single and double eyelid covelights follow this principle by directing light upwards and using the ceiling detail to help shield the LED from view. When properly positioned, this can reduce direct glare and create a more comfortable atmosphere for relaxing, watching television or spending time with family.
The final effect depends on the LED brightness, diffuser, ceiling finish and viewing angle. Concealing the source helps control glare, but careful installation and appropriate brightness remain essential.
How Does This Compare with Side-Embedded LED Lighting?
An L-box with an LED profile embedded in its side can also avoid the open dust-collecting trough found in traditional coves. However, a side-facing light emits horizontally into the room, creating a different visual effect.
If its illuminated diffuser sits within your line of sight, the bright strip can appear more prominent and may cause glare—particularly at high brightness. A suitable diffuser, mounting position and dimming can help manage this.
Eyelid covelight instead directs illumination upwards, allowing the reflected glow to become the main feature. It is an option for homeowners who prefer softer ambient lighting and a more discreet light source.
A Cleaner Appearance When Switched Off
Some side-embedded LED systems leave an aluminium trim and diffuser visible across the face of the L-box. This contrasting line may not suit a continuous painted ceiling finish.
With a plaster-in eyelid profile, the mounting flange integrates into the surrounding finish. Depending on the profile and viewing angle, a small edge or diffuser may remain visible, but the emphasis is on the single or double stepped ceiling border.
Reduced Glare with a Dust-Conscious Design
Paramount’s Dustless Covelight Series brings together two design priorities: reducing direct exposure to the LED source and avoiding the deep, open trough associated with conventional cove lighting.
The aim is a discreet ceiling detail with comfortable upward illumination and fewer hard-to-reach recesses. Exposed surfaces can still collect dust, so cleaning and servicing access should be considered as part of the installation.
Choose single eyelid for a simple outline or double eyelid for a layered finish—both use upward lighting to create a softer ambient effect.
Heat Management and Servicing
Aluminium can help conduct heat away from the LED strip when the strip is correctly fitted with suitable thermal contact. LED performance also depends on the selected components and installation conditions.
Access to the LED strip and driver should be planned before the ceiling is finished. This allows the servicing arrangements to be considered alongside the appearance of the ceiling.
Curved Eyelid Covelight Designs in Singapore
Eyelid covelight can also follow curved ceiling outlines using a suitable flexible profile.
Rounded corners can soften a ceiling’s appearance and complement curved walls, openings or other interior features. They offer an alternative to a layout made entirely of straight lines and square corners.
Paramount supplies a flexible profile option. The proposed curve and installation arrangement need to be assessed before confirming suitability for your project.
What Does “Dustless” Mean?
Dustless Covelight Series is our product range name. It does not mean that exposed surfaces remain completely free of dust or that the lighting never needs maintenance.
The finished ceiling arrangement determines which surfaces remain exposed and how they can be cleaned. When choosing your design, it is useful to understand both the appearance and the practical maintenance requirements.
Before installation, confirm how the LED and driver will be accessed for servicing, together with the recommended cleaning method for the finished detail.
Planning Your Eyelid Covelight Installation
A suitable design needs to work with your room’s dimensions and existing features. Before recommending an arrangement, we will review:
Your existing ceiling and available installation space.
The rooms and perimeter sections you want to illuminate.
Your preference for single, double or curved detailing.
Nearby curtains, cabinetry and air-conditioning features.
Your lighting preferences and servicing access.
The required ceiling drop depends on the selected profile and the complete installation arrangement. Dimensions should be confirmed for your project rather than estimated from a reference photograph.
For an existing false ceiling, suitability for modification must be assessed before the scope of work is agreed.
If your project involves substantial ceiling alterations, check whether the proposed work requires approval under Singapore’s building regulations. The Building and Construction Authority’s guidance provides further information.
What Affects the Installation Cost?
The quotation depends on the length of the installation, complexity of the ceiling layout, straight or curved detailing, lighting components and finishing work required.
When comparing proposals, check whether the price includes:
False ceiling construction or alterations.
Aluminium lighting profiles.
LED strips and drivers.
Electrical installation.
Plastering and painting.
Clear inclusions make it easier to understand the complete cost of your chosen design.
Electrical installation should be planned with a suitably licensed professional. You can also refer to the EMA’s electrical safety guidance when reviewing your renovation scope.
